Ultrasonic Inspection (UT)
Where ultrasonic thickness techniques employ a longitudinal beam to measure the thickness of a component, ultrasonic shear waves are longitudinal beams projected into a part at an angle refracting the sound into a shear wave. This allows for inspection of welds without needing the transducer on the weld, but rather adjacent to the weld. Ultrasonic shear waves are used throughout industry to determine weld quality.
Because a technician must interpret the screen to determine the type and location of the flaw makes shear wave inspection more difficult than some other NDE methods where a discontinuity may be easy to see. Whereas in a radiograph it’s pretty simple to identify that something doesn’t look right, ultrasonic shear wave relies heavily on the skill of the technician. Become a good technician by taking a shear wave Level I class from ND3. We’ve been training technicians for decades on what those squiggly lines mean and the best ways to find flaws. Your Level I class will prepare you to consistently set up and use the shear wave instrument, and find defects.
Ultrasonic testing is so much more than thickness readings, stand out from the crowd with a shear wave course.
