Dye Penetrant Inspection
Ever put a straw into a drink and notice that the liquid level in the straw is different than the liquid level in the cup? That’s an example of a physical phenomenon called capillary action where the liquid tries to travel up the sides of the straw. The liquid is not defying gravity and flowing up the side of the straw, yet it seems to. Capillary action is crucial to Dye Penetrant Inspection.
Often used under the wrong conditions, dye penetrant is arguably one of the easiest NDE methods to use. You can go to an auto supply store and buy a dye penetrant kit. That doesn’t mean that the test will be of any use. It is a very easy to understand and use method, but that simplicity makes standardization across all industries and technicians impossible. Because of these and several other factors, dye penetrant is one of the least reliable.
Change that by attending a dye penetrant class offered by ND3.You’ll learn why process control is so critical to a test, how people do it wrong and how to correct that, when to say you’ve reached the limit and another method should be used, and where and what to expect in way of indications.
